summer skincare routine

Warmer weather, longer days, ice cream, and beach day trips – summer is finally here! This also means a change in your wardrobe, starbucks order and most importantly… skincare!!

Being one of our largest organs, our skin undeniably deserves all the love and attention. But where do we even begin? Switching from winter to summer skincare may seem overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’re going to walk you through some things to consider when curating that hot girl summer skincare routine.

summer skincare essentials

Let’s dive into the essentials for the perfect summer skincare routine:

spf is your summer bff

Let’s be honest, SPF is important 365 days a year but it's non-negotiable during the warm summer months! Wearing sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful sun rays that can cause early aging, skin damage and even skin cancer. If you think you’re covered with the SPF in your foundation, think again! You need to be using at least SPF 30 to keep your skin protected. Oh and while we are on the topic… don’t forget about your body and lips! Getting a lip balm with SPF is a true life saver because you know you’re covered wherever you go.

lighten it up

Just like switching from heating to A/C is essential in the summer, trading in those heavy-weight for light-weight products is an important step in your summer skincare routine. Foaming and jelly cleansers are great light-weight alternatives that get the job done without striping your skin's natural oils.

dewy ≠ moisturized

Although you may feel like you don’t need a moisturizer, it’s important to keep your skin hydrated in the sun. Opting for a water-based moisturizer is a great daily moisturizer choice that will let your skin breathe in the heat. The most important part is to listen to your skin – if you still need a thick moisturizer, that’s totally okay! Just leave those thicker moisturizers for your night time routine to ensure that it doesn’t sit on your skin on a sweltering summer day.

gentle exfoliation

A key part of a skincare routine is gentle exfoliation! It is vital that we continue to exfoliate our skin in the summer in order to remove dead skin cells but remember to keep it to a minimum. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin’s natural oils and can result in hyper-sensitivity. Try exfoliating 1-2 times a week with a gentle exfoliator. We recommend giving our sisal loofah bag a try. All you have to do is pop your soap into the bag and scrub away – it’s gentle, easy to use, biodegradable and will make your soap bars last longer.

h20 everywhere you go

Water, Water, Water – Remember as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, the importance of staying hydrated increases. Hydrate your body (and thus your skin) by drinking plenty of water. Pro-Tip: Fill a water bottle for the day and bring it wherever you go. Having immediate access to water will help encourage you to stay more hydrated.

look for non-comedogenic products

It’s so important to be using products that will not clog your pores, that includes makeup, lotion, sunscreen, etc. This is vital especially since clogged pores become so prevalent during this time of the year due to the sweat and moisture that our body excessively produces. Using non-comedogenic products will help prevent any irritations, build-up and breakouts.

vitamin c... c is for crucial

Although you get some Vitamin C from your diet, there is no guarantee that it’s going right to your skin. Using Vitamin C serum is the most direct way to ensure that our skin is absorbing all the benefits. It is known to prevent hyperpigmentation, reduce fine lines, aid in the development of collagen and will give you a natural glow.

fit check

The change from winter wools to summer silks make the biggest difference. Wearing clothing made from cooler, breathable fabrics will ensure that sweat and moisture can easily wick away from your body and will help prevent breakouts. Helping your skin breathe is an important step to having summer-ready skin!

self-care date night

Last, but definitely not the least, if there’s one relationship you want blooming this summer, it's the one with your skin! Set time aside for self-care at least once a week. It can be as simple as face masks, a movie and a glass of wine but it will make all the difference. Don’t let a week go by without showing your skin that you care!

All equipped with tips and tricks for the ultimate summer skincare routine, you can now go out and enjoy that warm weather... Just don't forget the SPF!

cheers to the best summer yet!
